Common Umpiring Questions

Q. Are the hands considered part of the bat?
A. No.
 
   
Q. Does the batter-runner have to turn right after over-running first base?
A. No.
 
  
Q. If the batter breaks his wrists when swinging, is it a strike?
A. No. The bat must cross past the plate before it is a swinging strike.
 
  
Q. If a batted ball hits the plate first, is it a foul ball?
A. No.
 
   
Q. Is the ball dead on a foul-tip?
A. No.
 
   
Q. Can the batter be forced to not switch batter's boxes after two strikes?
A. No.
 
   
Q. If the batter does not pull the bat out of the strike zone while in the bunting position, is it an automatic strike?
A. No. As long as the batter does not attempt to swing at or attempt to hit the ball, it is not a strike.
 
   
Q. Is the batter out if a bunted ball hits the ground and bounces back up and hits the bat while the batter is holding the bat?
A. No. Only if the ball hits any part of the body while the batter is out of the batters box is the batter out.
 
   
Q. Is the batter out if the batter's foot touches the plate?
A. No. Only if the foot is completely out of the batters box at the time of the pitch.
 
   
Q. Does the tie go to the runner?
A. No. There are no ties. Only Out or Safe calls.
 
   
Q. Where can I get a copy of the ASA Official Rules of Softball?
A. ASA Rule Books are only distributed at the local level by the ASA Commissioner or their staff. Please contact your local State/Metro Commissioner or Umpire-In-Chief.
